Unwanted Company

Again and again,
it gathers, uninvited.
Sneaking in.
Gathering in piles.
Mocking my inattentiveness.
Spreading itself
in ubiquitous layers
in every nook and cranny,
embedding quietly in every orifice
of every object
decorative and useful,
without prejudice.
Sitting morosely on tables and lamps,
pictures and chairs,
dulling the antique silver platter.
I shoo it away.
For a brief moment,
it’s gone.
But it returns.
Silently infiltrating.
Imposing its company on me.
Scoffing at my strategy to live without it.
