Summer, Finally

Finally, summer arrives.

After weeks of cool rain

And flooded bike paths

The pool is open

For laps, and

For shrieking, joyful kids

To play in the fountains

Of the wading pool.

It feels like the summers

Of my youth.

Hot and happy.

Easy days

Of play.

But school lurks.

Just weeks ahead

The meetings start,

The classrooms fill and

After months of idle writing

And reading

I will have to acknowledge that

Sabbatical is over.

But for now

I fight against looking ahead.

Instead

Toasting in the sweet summer sun,

Swimming in the sparkling blue water,

I wallow in summer’s blinding glimmer.
