Paul

A former student.

“My student,”

I might have said.

A good student

Diligent.

Smart.

There.

Engaged.

A shy smile.

A person I thought I knew

Who came back

To share his good fortune

In work and life

A house, a wife.

Now,

Gone.

By his own hand.

My brain rendered useless

To explain.

There is no rational

Piece of the story.

My heart can’t believe.

The pain

I never saw.

Behind the façade

Lurking,

So closely guarded

Buried under

Firm religious belief and

Excellent work.

No going back.

The pain spreads

Among us.

In disarray we

Struggle

Emotionally drained.

Physically weak.

Broken by

Grief

And no answers.
