17th and 23rd

Small

Brown-shingled house,

Surrounded by lilacs

Pungently penetrating the warming air.

Front yard

Marked by a huge weeping willow.

The place of refuge,

Among brilliant yellow-green buds,

For a small

Tree-climbing girl.

In the parking

Iris thick and fragrant

Marking Memorial Day and

The trip to the cemetery where

My sisters’ father lay.

Spring joy punctuated by sorrow.
